Drone Weight Categories and Requirements
In Australia, drones are commonly classified by weight. The applicable requirements also depend on whether you fly for fun or for business, the location and the type of operation.
- Micro: 250 g or less
- Very small: more than 250 g and not more than 2 kg
- Small: more than 2 kg and not more than 25 kg
- Medium: more than 25 kg and not more than 150 kg
- Large: more than 150 kg
Use the drone’s total take-off weight, including the battery, memory card, propeller guards and any attached accessories.
Flying for fun
You do not currently need a licence, operator accreditation or registration to fly for sport or recreation. A drone weighing more than 25 kg requires CASA approval. All recreational flights must follow the drone safety rules.
Flying for business or work
Drones used for business or as part of a job must generally be registered, regardless of weight. Operator accreditation is required for many micro and excluded-category operations. Heavier or more complex operations may require a Remote Pilot Licence (RePL), a Remotely Piloted Aircraft Operator’s Certificate (ReOC) or specific approval.
Requirements can change. Check CASA’s current drone weight categories and requirements and registration requirements before flying.
